How to Choose Kidswear: Safety, Fabric, Sizing and Supplier
Reviewed by Khalil Syed, Founder, Hurain Engitech & Trade · Hurain Garments Exporter · Updated 2026-11-06
Children's clothing is the most regulated part of apparel. A cute design can still be refused at the border for a drawstring at the neck, a small detachable button, a restricted dye or a flammability failure. Fabric must also be soft, and sizes must follow age bands, not adult logic. This guide explains the rules and tests that matter, how to choose fabric and sizes, how to inspect a lot and how a bulk kidswear order is handled.
Safety rules for children's clothing
Safety rules differ by market but share the same worries: strangulation, choking and chemicals. In the EU, EN 14682 restricts cords and drawstrings on children's clothing. In the United States, the Consumer Product Safety Commission enforces drawstring rules, flammability standards for children's sleepwear and CPSIA limits on lead and phthalates. Small buttons, snaps and embellishments must be firmly attached, because a detached part is a choking hazard.
Tell the supplier the age group and destination before design starts. A style sold for a baby under 3 years has stricter limits than one for a ten-year-old.
- No neck drawcords on hoodies for children, and limited cords elsewhere.
- Buttons and snaps pass a pull test, or use sewn-on tapes and printed designs instead.
- Sleepwear for the US must meet flammability rules or be tight-fitting.
| Market | Cords and drawstrings | Chemicals |
|---|---|---|
| European Union | EN 14682 | REACH, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 on request |
| United States | CPSC drawstring rules | CPSIA (lead, phthalates) |
| Gulf and Africa | Follow EU rules where retailers ask | OEKO-TEX or REACH on request |
Chemical compliance: REACH, CPSIA and OEKO-TEX
REACH is the EU chemicals regulation and restricts substances such as certain azo dyes and heavy metals in textiles. CPSIA sets limits for lead and phthalates in children's products sold in the United States. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is a voluntary label that tests the finished textile for harmful substances; Class I applies to baby articles. Many European and Gulf retailers ask for it. Request test reports for the specific lot or fabric, not only a generic certificate.
Fabric and construction
Soft combed cotton single jersey and interlock suit T-shirts, bodysuits and sets; cotton poplin and twill suit shirts, dresses and shorts; brushed fleece suits winter wear. Flat seams, tagless or soft printed labels and snap placements that stay clear of the skin keep children comfortable. Shrinkage matters more than usual, because parents wash often, so set a limit of about 3% to 5% tested to ISO 6330.
Prints should be water-based or soft-hand and tested for fastness; heavy rubber prints crack and can fail chemical tests.
Sizing and inspection
Kidswear is sized by age or height: for example 2-3, 4-5, 6-7 and 8-9 years, or 92, 104, 116 and 128 cm. Confirm the system, and a measurement chart with tolerances, before sampling. Inspect at AQL 2.5 for major and 4.0 for minor defects under ISO 2859-1, and add a needle detection check for children's goods. Check trims by a pull test and look for loose threads that could wrap fingers.
Ordering Kidswear from Hurain Garments Exporter
Hurain Garments Exporter is a trading and export company: our kidswear are made by partner factories and we handle sampling, inspection, packing, documents and shipping. Because we buy in volume from those factories, prices are competitive and below the average wholesale price.
For kidswear we confirm the age group and destination first, then agree fabric, trims, prints and the safety and chemical tests needed, approved on a pre-production sample.
Kidswear is folded and polybagged with suffocation warnings printed on the bag where required, then packed in cartons by size and design assortment, with age-size labels.
- Minimum order: Typically 500–1,000 pieces per design; sets can be mixed by size within a design. A half container or a full container is also possible, as per your requirement.
- Lead time: 35–50 days from approved sample.
- Samples: a pre-production sample is approved before bulk; sample and courier costs are normally adjusted against the first order.
- Payment: 50% advance to confirm the order and 50% before dispatch; L/C can be discussed on request.
- Terms and documents: EXW, FOB, CFR or CIF, with commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and bill of lading, plus inspection and test reports on request.
- Different garments can be combined in one consolidated FCL or LCL shipment.

Frequently asked questions
Can kids' hoodies have drawcords?
For the EU and US, neck drawcords on children's clothing are restricted. Choose cord-free hoods or compliant fastenings, and confirm the rule for your market before ordering.
Which certificate do European buyers ask for?
Most ask for REACH compliance and many for OEKO-TEX Standard 100 test reports. Request them for the specific lot or fabric.
