How to Choose Caps: Crown, Fabric, Embroidery and Supplier

Reviewed by Khalil Syed, Founder, Hurain Engitech & Trade · Hurain Garments Exporter · Updated 2026-11-06

A cap is judged by how it sits on the head and how the logo looks after a year of sun and sweat. Crown structure, fabric, closure, sweatband and embroidery quality separate a cap that holds shape from one that collapses. This guide covers cap styles, fabric, embroidery, sizing and closures, tests, inspection and how a bulk cap order is handled.

Cap styles and structure

A structured six-panel cap has a stiffened front panel (buckram) that keeps the crown upright. An unstructured or 'dad' cap has no buckram and sits soft and low. Trucker caps have a mesh back for ventilation, and snapbacks have a flat brim and adjustable plastic snap. Brim length, curve and the quality of the brim board change how the cap looks on the head; ask for a reference cap or a measurement drawing.

  • Structured six-panel: promotional and sports caps.
  • Unstructured: fashion and casual caps.
  • Trucker: mesh back, hot climates.
  • Snapback and fitted: streetwear and team caps.

Fabric, sweatband and closure

Cotton twill is the standard: it takes embroidery well, breathes and is easy to wash. Brushed cotton gives a soft look; polyester and nylon suit sports and weather-resistant caps; mesh is used on trucker backs. The sweatband should be cotton or moisture-wicking fabric, as it sits against the forehead. Closures include a fabric strap with a metal buckle, a plastic snap, Velcro or an elastic fitted back; the metal parts should be nickel-free or plated for skin safety in some markets.

Test colour fastness to washing, rubbing and perspiration to the ISO 105 series, because dark caps often stain forehead and hair with sweat.

Sizing, inspection and packing

Most caps are one size with an adjustable closure, around 56 to 60 cm head circumference; fitted caps are sized in 7 to 7 5/8 or S, M, L and XL. Inspect at AQL 2.5 for major and 4.0 for minor defects under ISO 2859-1: shape, symmetry, logo placement, stitching, brim and closure. Caps are nested or packed in cartons with crown protection to keep the shape in transit.

Ordering Caps from Hurain Garments Exporter

Hurain Garments Exporter is a trading and export company: our caps are made by partner factories and we handle sampling, inspection, packing, documents and shipping. Because we buy in volume from those factories, prices are competitive and below the average wholesale price.

For caps we agree the style, fabric, closure and logo method on a sample, approve the digitised embroidery file, and set the colour and size mix per carton.

Caps are packed in cartons with crown support or in rigid export cartons so the crown keeps its shape in transit, and are marked by style, colour and quantity.

  • Minimum order: Typically 1,000–3,000 pieces per design; 500 pieces for stock colours with simple embroidery. A half container or a full container is also possible, as per your requirement.
  • Lead time: 25–40 days.
  • Samples: a pre-production sample is approved before bulk; sample and courier costs are normally adjusted against the first order.
  • Payment: 50% advance to confirm the order and 50% before dispatch; L/C can be discussed on request.
  • Terms and documents: EXW, FOB, CFR or CIF, with commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and bill of lading, plus inspection and test reports on request.
  • Different garments can be combined in one consolidated FCL or LCL shipment.

Frequently asked questions

What fabric is best for embroidered caps?

Cotton twill is the standard for embroidered caps: it takes stitching cleanly, breathes and washes well. Polyester and mesh suit sports and trucker styles.

What is the difference between structured and unstructured caps?

A structured cap has stiff buckram in the front panels that holds the crown upright. An unstructured cap has none, so it sits soft and low.

Can I order caps with my logo and private label?

Yes. Embroidered, woven-patch or printed logos, inside labels and your own packing can all be made to your requirement and approved on a sample.
