How to Choose School Uniforms: Fabric, Shade, Durability and Supplier
Reviewed by Khalil Syed, Founder, Hurain Engitech & Trade · Hurain Garments Exporter · Updated 2026-11-06
A school uniform has to last a year of daily wear and match the school's colours in September and again next September. Shade matching, fabric durability, sizing for growing children and on-time delivery before term matter more than a low price. This guide covers fabric choice, shade control, tests, sizing, repeat orders and how a bulk or tender uniform order is handled.
Fabric and durability
Shirts are usually poplin in poly-cotton blends of 65/35 to 80/20, 100 to 130 GSM. Trousers, skirts and pinafores use twill, gabardine or drill of 180 to 260 GSM. Knitted polos and sweaters use pique and fleece. A polyester-rich blend resists creasing, shrinkage and fading, while a cotton-rich blend feels better in hot climates. State the blend, the weight and the weave in the specification.
Test pilling resistance to ISO 12945-2 and abrasion where trousers wear first at knees and seat. Reinforced knees, double-stitched seams and bar-tacked pockets extend the life of the garment.
| Item | Fabric | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Shirt or blouse | Poly-cotton poplin | 100 to 130 GSM |
| Trousers, skirt, pinafore | Twill, gabardine or drill | 180 to 260 GSM |
| Polo or sports shirt | Pique knit | 180 to 220 GSM |
| Sweater or jacket | Fleece or knit | 280 to 380 GSM |
Shade matching and repeat orders
A school's colour must match year after year. Approve the shade with a physical swatch or lab-dip, set a tolerance, and ask for the dye lot to be recorded. Keep the approved swatch, size chart and embroidery file on record so repeat orders match. Colour fastness to washing, rubbing and light should be tested to the ISO 105 series, because a faded blazer or shirt is the common complaint from parents.
Sizing, logos and embroidery
Uniforms are sized by age or chest or waist measurement. Provide a chart with tolerances and decide the ratio by school roll; many schools also want extra sizes for growth. Logos can be embroidered, woven or printed. Embroidery lasts longest but needs a digitised file and placement approved on a sample. Check that the logo is the right size and position on every piece.
Inspection, timing and tenders
Inspect at AQL 2.5 for major and 4.0 for minor defects under ISO 2859-1, checking measurements, shade across cartons, logo placement and packing by item and size. Work back from the school start date: shade approval, sampling, production, inspection and sea transit all take weeks, so order early. For tenders, confirm the quantity per item and delivery schedule in writing.
Ordering School Uniforms from Hurain Garments Exporter
Hurain Garments Exporter is a trading and export company: our school uniforms are made by partner factories and we handle sampling, inspection, packing, documents and shipping. Because we buy in volume from those factories, prices are competitive and below the average wholesale price.
For school uniforms we agree the fabric, shade swatch, sizes and logo on a sample, keep the approved swatch and files on record for repeat orders, and plan delivery before term starts.
Uniforms are packed by item and size, polybagged with size labels, and cartons are marked by school, item and size for easy distribution.

Frequently asked questions
What fabric is best for school uniforms?
Poly-cotton blends of about 65/35 to 80/20 are the most common: they hold shape, resist fading and dry quickly. Cotton-rich blends feel cooler in hot climates.
How do you keep the colour the same each year?
We approve a swatch or lab-dip, record the shade and dye lot, and keep it on file so repeat orders match within the agreed tolerance.
Can you supply uniforms for a tender?
Yes. Quantities per item and size, delivery schedule and shade approval are fixed in writing, and small schools can be grouped into one order.
